New study indicates keto diet could reduce risk of Alzheimer’s disease

A recent research study in America has suggested that following a keto diet could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. It is suggested that following the diet could create a healthy balance of microorganisms in the gut which in turn could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Simanchal Mishra, Sr. Consultant NeuroPhysician at Medicover Hospitals, said:

‘Possible solutions to prevent this problem are being researched for decades, and this new study provides a glimpse of hope. There is now a possible preventive mechanism through which the risk of Alzheimer’s can be reduced to a great extent, and the suggested solution appears to be an easily manageable one.’

How the keto diet could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

New research has indicated that a keto diet could reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by altering the bacteria in the gut.

The recent study reportedly found a link between the distinctive gut bacterial ‘signature’ in patients suffering from mild cognitive impairment (MCI), including Alzheimer’s disease, and the altered gut bacteria when following a keto diet.

The Alzheimer’s Association reported that MCI is witnessed in at least 15-20% of people over the age of 65 which then impacts their ability to think. It has been found that following a ketogenic diet could alter the gut bacteria and potentially reduce the biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease in the cerebrospinal fluid of those with MCI.

A breakthrough in Alzheimer’s disease research?

This research could be a breath of fresh air when it comes to the research focused on reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The potentially breakthrough study could allow scientists to focus on bacterial gut health and reducing harmful gut fungi in order to potentially prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

By following a keto diet, patients could potentially reduce the risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease, as well as reducing the risks of other diseases that the diet is reportedly well known for. The keto diet has been linked with potentially being able to reduce the risk factors of heart disease, certain cancers, and could potentially reduce seizures.
