GMO-free products are hugely important. GMO, or Genetically Modified Organisms, is where plants or animals undergo genetic altering during the process of growth of rearing.
Genetically modified crops are not currently grown commercially in the UK, but they are regularly imported and are often used in the making of animal feed and a number of food products. The growing of GMO products is generally prohibited in the UK and must be approved by the government. There are also strict rules on labelling – all food products containing GMO must be labelled, including food crops derived from GMO products which do not contain any GMO themselves.
What does GMO-free mean?
GMO-free means that the food or product contains no genetically modified organisms and is made from completely natural, authentic ingredients.
Why is this so important?
Worldwide, over 80% of GMO crops are said to have been engineered for herbicide tolerance. This means that the use of toxic herbicides has increased over 15 times the amount it was used when GMO began. The increased use of toxic herbicides could be damaging to both the environment and the population, with the practice previously being labelled as ‘probably carcinogenic’.
Research into the constant consumption of GMO foods has indicated that it can have links to adverse effects on health, including organ damage, gastrointestinal disorders, infertility, and cancer. People who stopped consuming processed food reported an improvement with long-term health struggles.
Food that is grown or made sustainably, without the use of GMO or pesticides, can be rich in nutrients and can stay fresher for longer. Ultimately, GMO-free can be 100% natural. The growth of these natural ingredients could have a positive impact on the environment, with no synthetics or chemicals being used or released into the atmosphere and ground.
